Title
absolute
(n,k)
rule
: the
(n,k)
rule
applied
to
tables
of
positive
and
negative
data.The
Subject
Statistical_methodology
Description
The
(n,k)
rule
is
used
by
Statistics
New
Zealand
for
identifying
responses
in
tables
that
pose
a
risk
to
respondent
confidentiality
. The
(n,k)
rule
was
designed
for
use
on
cells
that have
only
nonnegative
responses
.
Generally
, for
tables
containing
both
positive
and
negative
or
only
negative
responses
,
using
the
(n,k)
rule
leads
to
oversuppression
;
however
,
it
can
also
lead
to
confidentiality
breaches
. This
research
report
suggests
an
extended
(n,k)
rule
:
absolute
(n,k)
,
which
applies
the
(n,k)
rule
to the
absolute
values
of
responses
. The
absolute
(n,k)
rule
solves
almost
all
the
problems
associated
with
using
the
(n,k)
rule
on
positive
and
negative
data
.
